My Corn Plant has flowers!

Posted on by AJ Ianozi

Well, I have a Corn Plant (aka Dracaena Fragrans, aka Dragon Flower) that I’ve had for the longest time. And a few weeks before Thanksgiving, something amazing happened – it started to grow flowers! This is a big accomplishment for me, and I’ll explain why.

First off, THIS is a Corn Plant – mine looks kinda like that one.

I first bought it this about 8 years ago, it was on clearance at the local grocery store. The store price was about $30, but it was on sale for $5 since it was almost all black/dying. The person there said that the tree was going to die, and if I didn’t buy it, they’d just throw it out at the end of the day. I’ve always liked trying to revive plants, so I figured I’d buy it and nurse it back to health.

It was, of course, a success – since I still have that tree today, and after 8 years, the tree just started growing flowers!

During the day, the flowers are closed, and at night they open up and fill the entire house with its aroma. It’s a very strong and overpowering scent similar to Chamomile or Honeysuckle; I read that if the plant is outside, you could smell it for hundreds of ft. Currently, there’s also this really thick sap all over the place from these flowers (you can see them in the pictures), but is usually drips into the pot and not on the floor, so it’s not too bad.

After about a week or so, the flower stalk will die and the plant will continue to grow like it did before – after years of growing this flower, I’ll only be able to experience it for about a week.

Anyway, here’s some pics (the flowers are closed during the day, and open at night):

Jokes aside, nice job reviving it.

Congrats! So if it dies, is there a way to repeat it's life cycle so it can bloom once again in a few years?

@Toshi: The tree sprouted a new stalk (you can see it really small in one of the pictures), so that may eventually grow to produce flowers, though from what I've read, the tree usually only has flowers once after it's mature (atleast 5 years, some it was 18-20) then no more flowers :(
